Good morning,
In light of the events that took place on January 6, 2021, at the United States Capitol in Washington, DC, the UConn Financial Educators Council is reaching out to our community of fellow students and readership, in an effort to offer support and solidarity. For those looking for the details of the event, we have linked multiple references below. According to sources such as the New York Times, CNBC, and CNN, Pro-Trump rioters stormed the capitol during a ceremonial affirmation of Joe Biden as President-Elect.
This event resulted in 4 deaths, mass destruction of the capitol building, and a continuation of the dangerous precedent that differences in political opinions are to be met with violence and disrespect. We are deeply saddened by this occurrence, and keenly aware of the timely juxtaposition the event, and its response, holds to the Black Lives Matter movement.
Amidst the state of our nation, we are disheartened by the redundancy of our sentiment. It seems we are cyclically saddened by the state of our country, and as a collective, are struggling to find peace. We recognize that you might feel the same.
As individuals specifically concerned with financial and economic autonomy, literacy, and equity, we are called on to lead this movement. Without personal security, without justice, and without peace, there is no hope for economic progress. Unfortunately, the radically violent behavior of a select group of individuals will divert the country’s attention further from the financial crisis currently plaguing the majority of Americans.
We, as an organization, will not give any light to hate. We will continue to lift each other up and to focus on educating and empowering the majority. There is no room for violence. There is no room for terrorism. There is no room for the treasonous acts our country was forced to withstand. There is only progress and only hope.
Please reach out to those around you, and feel free to reach out to any of us here at UConn FEC.
In Solidarity,
The E-Board
